In spite of the heavy rainfall in the past week, hard work by Head Green Keeper Mike Branson and his team resulted in the Threlkeld Hall course being in very good condition for Keswick Golf Club’s Four Ball Better Ball Open.
While the wet fairways meant that the competition was played using preferred lies the record entry of 148 players from around the county were especially full of praise for the trueness of the greens.
Scoring was high throughout the field with first place going to Tony Kitto and Jason Norman from Seascale, playing off handicaps of 9 and 21 respectively, who came in with 47 Stableford points.
The next three places went to pairings from Keswick with Lee Watson off 14 and Steve Grogan off 9 taking second spot with 46 points. Club Captain Mik Brown and Bob Thornton both off 9 came third with 44 points and fourth place went to Mark Davidson off 17 and Gerry Maypother off 24 on 43 points.
Keswick member John Hartshorn off 9 partnered by Martin Cooper from Ulverston playing off 17 came fifth on 42 with sixth place going to the Keswick pairing of Attilio Savasi off 10 and Bob Watson off 15 with 41 points.
Adam Bragg from St Bees who plays off 5 won the prize for nearest the pin on the 3rd with Lee Watson being nearest on the 16th. Keswick’s ever improving Jamie O’Brien, who was last year’s Junior Captain, now playing off 9 won the prize for the longest drive on the 7th.
Proof that the greens were putting well was confirmed by the 13 “Two’s” recorded on the day.
