Update of the course conditions on the web-site & telephone message

As playing members know the conditions of the course changes from day to day during the winter period and the weather in Threlkeld can be quite different to other parts of the County, where members are traveling from. The Club fully appreciates that members travelling some distance would like to know the conditions of the course before leaving home. We have been looking at various ways of putting a system in place that will update the web-site and the telephone message in a timely manner and we will now over a period of time test the following system.

Peter Rainey, Head Greenkeeper, will update the web-site as close to 8am as possible, Monday to Friday. The telephone message will be updated by the secretary or Professional as soon as possible after 9am.

At the weekend the Professional will update the web-site and telephone message as soon as possible after 9am.

The above times are for the winter period and as soon as spring (and summer!) arrive, these messages will be updated earlier but the timing is subject to staff arriving at the Club.

Captain’s Challenge – Change of date

Rule Book & Calendar of Events 2010 – Delay

The printing of the 2010 Rule Book and Caledar of Events has been delayed as staff at the printers are unable to travel to work.

I hope to meet with the printers sometime next week , which means the diary should be ready to post out to members by the end of January at the latest.

Please accept my appology and for any queries on dates please refer to the diary section on the web-site.

Welcome to the new updated web-site

A Happy New Year to ALL Keswick Golf Club Members and welcome to this new updated web-site.

Visually there may only be minor changes but I hope you will find it easier to navigate through. Improvements to help our members include the diary page – I hope to have the diary updated very soon. This news page will also be updated regularly and will not only be used to publish press releases, members will also be able to find day to day news. An other big change is the competition entry page – Those playing in a Sunday competition can now enter by duly completing the members competition entry form.

Hopefully you will make use of this new site, if you have any comments or anything to publish please let me know.

I wish you many happy golfing days in 2010 and hope the snow will melt very soon!

Presentation Night

Keswick Golf Club’s presentation night was recently held at the clubhouse with over 50 people attending to congratulate this season’s trophy winners.

Winners & runners up of the main club championships were: Club Championship, Men: Adam Swainbank; Ladies: Pam Dobinson; Handicap Championship Men: Bernard Kitching; Ladies: Judy Figg; Senior Masters: Ian Pettigrew; Ladies Bronze: Barbara Hancock; Mixed Doubles: Tony & Dawn Stamper; Mens Doubles: Colin Mason & Stephen Barnes

Keswick Pair Triumph in National Final

The couple had both enjoyed a consistent season, both individually and together, the highlight being them winning the club’s mixed knockout championship. All this stood them in good stead for their Portuguese challenge which they not only rose to but passed with flying colours.

After playing only one practise round the couple exceeded all expectations by returning a tremendous score of 46 stableford points. That was enough for a 3 point victory over a pair from Skipton Golf Club.

As well as being national champions the victory also earns the Stampers a return trip next year where they will try to defend the title.
This year has been unprecedented for Keswick golfers on their travels. Club Steward Alan McNichol and Richard Barnes started the ball rolling with victory in the International Pairs grand final at Carnoustie. Club President Ernest Clark then finished a highly credible 3rd in the Marie Curie national final at Fairmont, St Andrews. Now the Stampers are national champions. Next up will be the turn of Club Professional Gary Watson and his amateur partner Bob Thornton who fly out to Turkey at the end of the month to compete in the grand final of the PGA National Pro-Am.

Jet setting duo bid for lift-off

Keswick professional Gary Watson admitted that the awful weather had forced him and his partner Bob Thornton to seek sunnier skies prior to competing in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship in Turkey next week.Watson headed for Portugal with a number of the club’s members while Thornton, an award-winning chef at Applethwaite’s Underscar Manor, went ‘across the pond’ to the South Carolina resort of Myrtle Beach to get some much needed practice ahead of the £30,000 tournament.

“Preparations haven’t been going too great here because of the awful weather since we actually qualified,” said Watson.

“Fortunately I’ve just had a week in Portugal, where I took my sticks, and Bob’s been across to the States and played there so at least that’s something.

“Apart from that, since qualifying for the final I’ve only played one event as I hadn’t planned to play too much this year. ”I’ve got a young daughter at home and now have another one on the way so maybe I should have played more golf!” The pair is one of 16 teams from across Great Britain & Ireland that will jet off next Sunday (Nov 30) and enjoy a five-day all expenses stay at the five star Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort in Antalya. The 36-hole tournament is being staged over Antalya Golf Club’s PGA Sultan on December 2 and 3 and Watson admits that neither he nor Thornton, who plays off eight, have high expectations. ”We didn’t have any when we went to the regional qualifier and I don’t think we’ll have any this time,” he said.

“We’ll just go there and see what happens.”

International Pairs Win

They finished 2nd with 44 points, which meant they qualified for the UK final, playing at Carnoustie on Tuesday and the Championship course on Wednesday. On Monday the pairfinished 2nd with 44 points and Tuesday they won with 38 points, leaving them as overall winners of the competition by 1 point with a total of 82.

They have now qualified to take part in the World final of the International Pairs Championship which will take place at Carnoustie in 2009.
